Charter Space Raises $5M to Expand Insurance Infrastructure for the Space Economy

Hike Ventures portfolio company Charter Space has announced a $5 million seed round as it expands its space insurance business, now serving more than 50 companies across the U.S. space and defense industrial base.

Charter Space

Hike Ventures portfolio company Charter Space has raised a $5 million seed round led by Crystal Venture Partners, with participation from QED, Blank Ventures, Gaingels, Hustle Fund, and other investors. The financing brings the company’s total funding to $8 million and was also featured by TechCrunch.

Charter Space is building insurance and financial infrastructure for the rapidly growing commercial space industry. In May 2026, the company launched Charter Interplanetary Risk Corporation, its nationally licensed insurance brokerage. It is now serving more than 50 companies across the U.S. space and defense industrial base and has built a backlog representing more than $35 million in gross written premiums.

The company initially set out to build software that brought together technical, manufacturing, and testing data for aerospace companies. Along the way, the team recognized that the same data could be used to improve the underwriting process for complex space assets and missions, leading Charter Space to expand its focus into insurance.

Historically, space companies have had limited access to insurance because underwriting satellites and other space assets is complex and expensive. As the commercial space economy expands, however, a growing number of satellite manufacturers, launch providers, and other space companies are creating demand for financial infrastructure that can better understand and price these risks.

Charter Space is developing insurance products that cover the full lifecycle of a mission, from pre-launch transportation and testing through launch and post-separation operations. The company also plans to expand coverage for emerging mission types including in-space servicing, space-based nuclear power, and lunar resource utilization.

With the new funding, Charter Space plans to expand its distribution and sales organization and broaden its suite of insurance products. As the space economy matures, insurance can serve not only as protection against operational risk, but also as infrastructure that enables companies to access a broader range of capital, including debt and credit.

Charter Space aims to build the financial foundation that allows more companies to take risks, attract capital, and participate in the continued growth of the commercial space economy.
